I have discovered a small amount of what I would have to believe are Pennsylvania Railroad perfins. They are all on stamps prior to 1940 mostly of the president series.
The Pefin is a Simple PRR that I am thinking stands for the Pennsylvania Railroad. Can anyone confirm this?

Can you post a pic? That sounds correct, but I'll have to see if its listed in my Scott specialized catalog or another one I have. I can't think of the name-brain freeze it's in single digits here not counting the wind chill. BRRR! |

Once again someone has answered a question correctly. You have to like this helpful family of ours. I would have had an answer for sure, but I'm still stuck at work. I should just bring my reference catalogs to work with me. That way I'll have something to do other than work. LOL oops gotta go the phone is ringing. |

Thanks for the link to the RR perfin pages. Just checked and confirmed identification of these two that are in my collection to be (GN)= Great Northern RR and (L&N RR) = Louisville & Nashville RR: The above perfins were applied to US airmail stamps (C19). (I also have non-RR perfins on the same stamp for DuPont Chemical and General Electric.) Never even knew I had these perfins until I just happened across them amongst a group of C19 stamps I had in an old stockbook. |

I've never been a huge perfin fan, but those pages of RR perfins are incredible. You may have just nudged me into a new tangent of collecting. I'm not sure whether to thank you Here's my recently acquired Union Pacific cover complete with UP perfin. |

I tell people this and they are like "wow I never knew that....." ZIP codes are a system of postal codes used by the United States Postal Service (USPS) since 1963. The term ZIP, an acronym for Zone Improvement Plan sorry it has nothing to do with perfins but looking at the letters "Pre-ZIP" put me to this. |

Max_Power: I posted this on another thread awhile ago, but since you raised the question about Zip Codes, the attached link suggests that the "Mr. Zip" cartoon character last appeared in the margins of stamps in January 1986, but no one has yet identified the last stamp issue to carry that logo. Any ideas? http://www.usps.com/postalhistory/_pdf/MrZIP.pdf |

OK, resurrecting old thread here. I just acquired these blocks (unfortunately didn't notice the seperation in the 3c. until I got it home. I was just wondering what the perfin is on the 1c. I'm guessing the other 3 are Pennsylvania RR. Is the other one North Pacific RR? Or would there be an "RR" with the "NP"? Also--is the extra hole in the upper-right of the NP for some kind of identification? I see lots of posts about the high interest in perfins. It may be a side collection I might pursue since I have a few others. Thanks. Is this still the same, but with a different size perfin? |

The perfin "NP" = Northern Pacific Railway Co.
Although I do not have a perfin catalog to identify varieties, I do know that this perfin type is known with an extra punch hole in certain areas that (I believe) identifies the specific location where the perfin was used.
Perhaps someone with a catalog can provide you with further information. |

"NP" with "dot" is catalog# N130 - Northern Pacific Railway , St. Paul, MN. "PRR" is Pensylvania Railroad Chicago, Ill. IF: 5-1/2m = catalog# P196; 6mm = P197; 7mm = P198
as listed in the "CATALOG OF UNITED STATES PERFINS" , by Joseph & Dorothy Balbough 1979, published by the Perfins Club. |
