The Charlton Heston design, in my humble opinion, is awful. Most people know him from films where he was much younger. Why not an image from then?

If you look closely at the announcement for the Charlton Heston stamp, you will see that is states:

Quote:
This stamp features a color portrait based on a photograph taken by the actor's wife, Lydia Clarke Heston. An image of Heston from the 1959 movie Ben-Hur decorates the selvage.

I'm sure the fact that the photo used for the stamp was taken by the actor's wife had a lot to do with the selection, most particularly since for the USPS to use the name, image, etc., it was licensed to them by the Charlton Heston Family Trust.

wt1 - after the fact, I did indeed see that a photo from Ben Hur was being used on the selvage. But the photo the stamp is based on, I dunno... I guess I just feel a person being honored on a stamp should also be readily recognizable.

To be honest, most of the modern portraits being used on US stamps are awful.

But hey, who am I? ;-)

I just got off phone with SFS, the Star Spangled Banner SSP type
coil/100 item # is now 789902. Do not know if there was a change.
Also, as of this morning they do not yet have an item # for $5.60 Verrazano –Narrows Bridge; 34 Cent Tree Postcards, nor the
Forever 10K Ferns strip 25.

"It appears they've slipped in a 4th variety of the Star Spangled Banner for March 3 ... 2 booklets (CCL & SSP), a coil (SSP) & an ATM pane (SSP).

The SSP version of the SSB coil has already hit PO's in Illinois.

Hmmm ... SSP coil order number is 789902 rather than 789942. Thanks for catching this. Copied the latter number onto a postit note & saved same, but don't remember where I copied it from. Should have caught the typo in any event since the other two coils were 789903 and 789904. Since an earlier post indicates that the SSP coil is already available (at least in Illinois), I think I'll check the local PO this week.

You can now pre-order the Jimi Hendrix Stamps, FDC's and Press Sheets at the USPS store's website. Here's the link for the stamps:

https://store.usps.com/store/browse...catBuyStamps

Although they don't shown the stamp design, they provide an interesting commentary on how the stamp is going to look:

Quote:
The stamp sheet, designed to resemble a vintage 45 rpm record sleeve, features a painting of Hendrix's face surrounded by colorful swirls and small icons that reference song lyrics or aspects of Hendrix's life.

The stamp art shows Hendrix in performance. The sixteen stamps are arranged in four blocks that resemble a kaleidoscope: With their upper corners meeting, the stamps appear to spin around each other. The quilt-like positioning results in three stamps in each block resting sideways or upside-down. Text below the stamps briefly describes Hendrix's musical legacy.

I agree 100% with Nells

Just compare this pic from the movie Ben Hur.

with the stamp

His hair sure wasn't grey back in 1959.

The 1959 Ben Hur film is truly a great American epic film which was a remake of an earlier 1925 silent film so I assume the MGM's film is also being honored.

It seems that Linn's Stamp News has scooped the upcoming design of the Jimi Hendrix stamp. To use their headline, the best term to describe it is "psychedelic" ... now that's a word I haven't seen used in awhile, especially when describing a postage stamp!

The Abraham Lincoln Press Sheet in the "without die cuts" format has been dropped from the USPS Store's website. One can assume that means the relatively small printing of 1000 pieces have been sold out. (The "with die cuts" variety is still available, though.)
