The link to the Charlton Heston stamp has been taken down by the USPS. I wonder why? (It seems that someone goofed.)

I guess with the songbirds waiting for spring is a good idea to me as the birds return to Minnesota.

I wonder who decided which image to use for this stamp.

He was a mega mega movie star for petes sake and should be
remembered for the way he looked when he acted in movies like Ben Hur,Ten Commandments,El Cid,
The Naked Jungle, The Agony and the Ecstasy etc etc. even for The Planet of the Apes or Soylent Green.

Not as an old man.

OK , before I get clobbered for being anti-ageist , I'm old
too, not as old as Charlton Heston when he died but getting there.

To quote from the narrative at the previously provided link:

Quote:
This stamp features a color portrait based on a photograph taken by the actor's wife, Lydia Clarke Heston. An image of Heston from the 1959 movie Ben-Hur decorates the selvage.

It's a fair bet that had something to do with it ... most especially since the disclaimer at the bottom of the announcement reads:

Quote:
Name and image of Charlton Heston licensed by the Charlton Heston Family Trust. BEN-HUR – Licensed By: Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. All Rights Reserved.

The reason why you may not find any Ferns at your local post office is because they are not meant to be use by average customer. They are only sold in rolls of 3,000 and 10,000 -usually only commercial bulk mailers buy in this quanity. Yes, the post office is allowing us collectors to purchase special cut rolls of 100 from the Stamp Fulfillment Center 790803 100/10M and 790003 100/3M.

Correction to my post about the Ferns. The small rolls are 25 stamps each, not 100.

I personally think the 2013 Scott 4804 "1963 March on Washington" and this latest "Shirley Chisholm" stamps are not nice looking stampsat all- considering the subject matter both deserved better -at least something like the "Rosa Parks" issue. I think Robert Shetterly is a better artist than these examples of his works.

Looks like the the Charlton Heston and 10 Songburds stamp will be issued in April of this year. The Heston pane selvage image will depict the chariot-racing scene from the movie Ben-Hur.

One can say the same thing about the upcoming Harvey Milk stamp (slated for May/June 2014 release). There have been news articles already suggesting that the stamp is nothing more than a means to include a openly gay person on a stamp (although there have arguably been others in the past.) There is even a online protest going on encouraging people to "boycott" the Harvey Milk Stamp.

Meanwhile, the LGBT community is lobbying for Bayard Rustin, another gay leader, as the possible subject of an upcoming stamp:

I suppose the USPS is happy about such publicity, however controversial, since it gives these stamp subjects a lot of media attention over that of most stamp issues.

Yes there have been stamps issued about the works or accomlishments in the past of people who also happen to be gayand that is as it should be. However, I do not understand this Harvey Milk issue.
He joined the United States Navy during the Korean War and served aboard the submarine rescue ship USS Kittiwake (ASR-13) as a diving officer. You have to be tuff for this special operations job. He later transferred to Naval Station, San Diego to serve as a diving instructor. In 1955, he was discharged from the Navy at the rank of lieutenant, junior grade. Why couln't the stamp be in honor of this service to our country instead honoring his sexual preference?
