Are you suggesting that Australians don't collect such items?

They appear to be cutouts (rather than cut squares) from embossed envelopes from back in the day.

Yes, I guess you could say they are collectible, as "back of the book" items, but typically today's collectors seek out the entire cover (or at least "cut squares" with a significant margin around the stamp indicia). Cutouts as shown in your scan typically aren't worth very much because they are no longer the modern, accepted way to collect these examples anymore.

In all fairness, though, the cutouts shown were probably put together many years ago to accommodate the earliest of stamp albums, which only provided a very small space for a item which resulted in a collector having to cut out the indicia as close as shown.

Even with the best of intentions, collectors often had a difficult time cutting these things out to perfection (as shown in your first example) as scissors have inadvertently cut into the UR corner, which diminishes its value to many collectors.

Those are neat looking and would make for great tie clip designs or lapel pin perhaps?

I collect Australian stamps. I love them and I would collect those too. However I like my stationary stamps to have a little more of the paper around the stamps. They look great but not the way I would collect them.

Hi Stewart,
Welcome to the group.

Where is this Australia??? Does it issue stamps??? Crikey, I think it does! Just kidding. I am American and, oddly, I don't have a lot of stamps from Down Under, but I will get to it someday. I am curious, though, in re: to cutouts and cut squares. Considering the vast size of my collection - stamps and covers - wouldn't it be the smart thing to start recollecting such items as cutouts (as long as the cover was common? It might actually ease the space crunch a little.

G,day Centrestage98 and Dave,
I knew all the time us Aussies are as smart as the Americans, thanks for your responses, I have not been collecting very long, and the only silly question I found was the question you do not ask.
Regards
Stewart

Well, Stewart, glad you joined the forum. There are many knowledgeable people here - and as many opinions to match, sometimes, but all with good intentions.

Yup, I collect Australian stamps, although not postal stationary, so I'm not sure where I fit into your question.
