I have the following cover with a black (engraved) omitted error Scott #2281B. The 2012 Scott specialized shows a catalog value of $45.00 for mint and a quick online search reveals that this about what they are currently selling for. The Scott catalog does a "-" for the value which means that there is not enough value/selling information to put a number on it. I can't find any info on a used one of these; so any input for value on this? In general should this item be valued as more/less/same as a mint example? It is a pretty ugly cover…
Thanks in advance for input/opinions

Don, I really do not think the cover is all that ugly?
Anyway, the PNC3 club does not list a price for this stamp, on or off cover, but if you want to know you might contact Robert Washburn.
He runs a website selling covers, specializing in plate number coils. Reach him at www.modcoverguy.com.

That's certainly a nice cover and I would second the comment that the cover is not "ugly" but indeed very collectible.

Although it may be a minor point, do note that the Scott Number should be accurately listed as 2281b (the "b" should be in lower case) to correctly identify this example.

You might want to put the cover under UV to see if it shows any signs of having been altered.

If you put the cover on ebay I would definately bid on it. Nice cover and the opposite of ugly!

I've seen at least one other cover (from TX) with this error stamp. I've never heard of faking a black engraving omitted and doubt it could be convincingly done without altering the litho colors.

Nice find. Date and in period cancel make it look very legitimate to me, but yes check it under UV to be certain. It would be valued much more than mint in my opinion. Perhaps $80-100 would be a good start to ask. It is not a plate numbered example otherwise higher.

I once sold an imperf bugs bunny single on cover (scott 3138) in period paying first class rate. Bought it for much less than a mint sheet, and sold it to a very happy collector for $300 who said it completed his collection and never thought he would find one. Probably the only legitimate usage of that stamp.

Yours is no bugs bunny imperf, but it is a similar rarity postally used and in period.
