Leave it to the USPS to help our youth with their geography. They in fact did place the Grand Canyon in the state of Colorado on the 2000 60 cent Air Mail stamp.
As luck would have it after the printing some one did notice this mistake and the USPS destroyed all 100 million stamps at a cost of $500,000.
So they reprinted the stamp again but this time the picture of the Grand Canyon had somehow been flipped horizontally during the production process, creating a mirror image of the scene. It took a Park Ranger to notice this mistake.
Since the stamps were now released and being sold the USPS let it go and again revised their quality control to prevent a mistake like this in the future.
Leave it to the USPS to make a mistake twice on the same stamp issue. I wonder how many errors occur that are caught before release. They wonder way they are having budget problems with $500 million dollar errors. Plus they teach the front line clerks to apply meters instead of selling the stamp stock they already have printed. Then when they don't sell the stamps, they have to be returned and destroyed. What a waste of time and money...
