Hi all, Wanted to get your take on this "386 line pair" that I just purchased. Have not gotten it yet but the guideline seems a little thick as compared to some of the others that I have seen and my other line pair that I own. This one either goes in the collection or the sub-collection of fakes that I have started to assemble.

I think you better dust off the "fakes" album. I don't even think it is a genuine coil... |

Real or fake, it is a pretty pair! By the way, the line is not a guide line but a joint line. It was caused by the two printing plates that did not completely line up. Ink would collect in this space which would manifest itself in a printed joint- or seam line. That also explains why they are of different thicknesses!

Thank you for the comments. Sinclair, what makes you think this is not even a coil? Kevin, why return to seller? How can you tell?
Thanks again for your valued opinion! |

Quote: the line is not a guide line but a joint line. If it is claimed to be a 386 line pair, then it IS supposed to be a guide line. Joint lines appear on rotary press stamps, not on flat plate press. |

To me, the supposed guide line is off-center; but then again the picture is a little tilted.
Not good with colors, but the guide line color seems a different shade from the frame lines. |

Quote: Kevin, why return to seller? How can you tell? Well...I sure you did not pay for a "fake" stamp.... #386 LPs are not cheap. Just do a ebay search.....386....look at the line between stamps. It is not a smear....the lines are clear and well defined. Perfs are not on a angle.... This is probably the most faked coil in US stamps.... Should ONLY buy with a certificate. |

The guide line is in the wrong location, is the wrong thickness and the wrong color - strike one, the line is fake.
None of the perfs appear to be parallel - strike two, the perfs have been added.
The straight edges should be straight and parallel, especially parallel, they are not - strike three, the coil was made by hand with a pair of scissors.
Who did you buy it from?

If you are going to buy premium US items such as this without certificates, I would suggest you at least purchase "How to Detect Damaged, Altered, and Repaired Stamps" by Paul W. Schmid. It's inexpensive, a short informative read, and covers a lot of the basics to help you weed out a decent percentage of the altered stamps. |

No if's about it. Never buy one of those coils without a certificate. The line is the least of your worries. |

Thank you all for your kind words of advice. Truth is I expected it to be fake when I purchased it and did not pay all that much. As I said I already have a line pair which I have pasted below. Does this one look a little better or anyone see issues :) |

I will have to dig out the cert. Why do you think this one is a fake? Misaligned perfs? |

Perf. 12 coils are all flat plate printings and the perf. holes usually do not align with those above or below and the guide lines are neat and thin. Are the margins wide enough on the imperf sides? On regular sheet stamps the guide lines would have a straight edge. |

I can't imagine you getting a clean cert on that pair. The bottom perfs are pretty skewed and the hole size looks like it might be a little big. The other problem is they look pretty round. Can't you post a better scan? |
