This is a bit outside my wheelhouse... as part of a lot I purchased are hundreds of used $1 Wilson, Scott 832. Other than searching for watermarks, do any of the color shades carry a premium?

I see at least three distinct shades, the most striking being a vivid bright magenta, almost pink in color. How fugitive is the magenta ink? Are changelings an issue with respect to identification?

Thanks.

There is a broad spectrum of color shades and misregistration. I see a lot more variety in the color shades of used stamps, so I would also wonder if color changelings are an issue.

However, some of the color shades are now recognized as legitimate, using mint stamps and also printing information as support. I believe the more recent Scott US Specialized has started listing more of them, some of which carry a moderate ($10-$100) premium for the mint stamps. Be looking for the that vivid bright magenta variety you mentioned, and also for the wet printed red violet variety (not the common dry printed red violet). Someone else will need to chime in regards to whether or not there is a real problem with color changelings.

If you get an opportunity, could you post side-by-side pic of some of the more dramatic color shades you find? Thanks!

revenuecollector.....I currently do not have a up to date SCOTTs...
but I have been seeing a variety (color) listed at auctions lately....and commanding
a hefty premium.
#832 and #832c are the common issues, 832c issued much later...(1954 compared to
1938 for the Presidentials Series)These 2 are easy to spot.
I will have to do some research....
GOOD LUCK!
Found any with watermarks??

That Bright Magenta is pretty unmistakable, it really is a very bright shade of pink. The inks from that period were generally pretty stable. Chemicals will make the $1 shades turn blue, but I have never heard of the violets becoming magenta; a quick look under a UV would give it away anyhow.

Agreed. Most chemical treatments (intentional or unintentional) will leave a tell-tale sign under proper UV light excitation.

Here is a scan of the blocks from the lot (the singles are far too numerous and disorganized). The blocks that jumped out to me are the block of 15 2nd from the top, and the block of 6 at the far right. They are both brighter than the others, yet different from one another.

Obviously, given the tolerances in scanner, web browsers, and monitors exact coloration cannot be conveyed, but you can see the comparative differences.
