How common are these? An approximate value?

Actually, they are more common than you might think. Here's a BidStart listing for a similar item with a BIN price of $6.50 (but no bids).

And another:

There is really no way to determine an exact value of such an "EFO" as there are no (or few) two examples that are exactly alike. Therefore, catalog values are not applicable in these instances. It comes down to supply and demand (what a seller is willing to let it go for and what a buyer is willing to pay). Unfortunately demand for these sort of things are quite limited as many collectors would prefer perfect examples of the stamp and those that do collect such "EFOs" are really part of a very limited collector market.

Bottom line is that the example shown has a premium value but not to the degree that anyone is going to get rich by selling it.

Thanks for the info. I was offered this for $25.00 and it seemed high to me but checking is always good.

I have never understood the philatelic fascination with errors.

For all intents and purposes, errors are mistakes. In almost any other hobby, they would be thrown out.

That's part of why philately is so much better than most other hobbies. The reason is because the production methods are as important to the hobby as the final product.
It is true that only in the hobbies of stamps, coins, and paper money collecting are errors valuable. In any other an error usually makes an item less valuable.

sdtom....I have a #807 currently listed in the auction section at this site.
Started @99c...not work $25, but about the same perf ships as the 1286 shown.
I have/had a few of the 807s.....so passing along something to someone who
can appreciate it....I like listing a few items here occasionally.
It is amazing how many page views the items get compared to ebay!!
