I am a beginner for collecting Washington/Franklin stamps. I just got a pair of 3c violet Wash head with perf 11. It labels as Sc#529. As I compared with the instructions on Scott book, it should be Type III. But the left one is obviously different with the Type III. I'm not sure it is Sc#529 or not? Can anyone help me? Thanks!

Here is a fast way to try and tell the difference. Type III the "P" and "O" of "POSTAGE" are clearly distinct and separated by a solid line of color.

Type IV the "P" and "O" of "POSTAGE" appear to be joined. This may be the most recognizable differentiating feature of the Type III and IV stamps

Hello t218gy.....

Welcome to the club.

By enlarging your photo you can see that the line between the P & O is broken......this is a type IV.
