Hi!,
How to do for identifying lake-red shades/colours in GB stamps of Queen Victoria era? Thanks for answers.

I use a Stanley Gibbons color guide. Also, this post would do much better in the World Wide stamp section. This guide and these stamps cannot be used with anything, especially from the Classic era, of the United States. Totally different animals all-together.

Many thanks for this indication which I ignored. Before I'm going to order it, please tell me if it's a very usefull tool and if colours/shades well correspond to those mentioned in the Concise SG catalogue. Thanks in advance.

Be aware that purchased color charts have a 'lifespan'. Be wary of 'used' color charts which may have had prolonged light exposures. Always store your color charts in a dark place and never allow them to sit for any time in the sunlight.

Even new colour charts may be of limited use. Printing ink formulas can vary depending on the batches of pigments used and paper absorbency can affect the density of colour. Scarlet lake, as the pigment is called, can be bright or dull with a slight tendency to blue and can be found in different shades as here.

Probably no help determining colour, but looks like an appealing trip back in time....

The S.G. color gauge is very useful with the S.G. catalog (and European stamps) but of absolutely no use at all for anything United States stamp color related. I hope this helps you out some? Best wishes and happy stamping! -Jeff
