There is a book which shows photos of all the various plates of these issues. If it cannot be plated than it is a forgery.

Here's a page on hawaiianstamps.com about detecting forgeries. Might help, certainly couldn't hurt.

Thanks, revcollector and jamesw!

I have already tried both sources (the book is available for a download), but, doesn't help too much. For example, broken "uku" is didn't mentioned neither as a sign of a specific forgery, or some type of exact plate error.

However, the laid paper suggest that, if is a real one, this should be the later issue (Scott #23).

Hi ILP! No, even if it is genuine, it should be the most common numeral issue - nothing special - possibly $10-20 worth as a filler.

But, I really like those early, simple (black and white) stamps (US despatch and locals are great, but very scarce and expensive).

I am partially color blind, so, those black and white issues are just good for my eyes :)

My understanding is that if it is not specifically mentioned as a plate variety, then it is a forgery. There are so many forgeries of these issues that a list of them all would probably be a book in itself.

More than a few reproductions exist with accurate visual appearance. There is essentially a 3-fold test: 1. plate ID; 2. verify typeset; 3. check paper type

Have you confirmed that your stamp is typeset?

Hi KHJ. Yes, I think that this is the real one, although seems to be repaired... which at all, as I have mentioned, makes it just a good space filler.

Space filler or not, nice stamp to have. I've got more than a couple of space fillers in my collection.
