Hi, new to the forums, does anyone know anything about a postage stamp album dated 1866. The front cover title is "Postage Stamp Album". The inside title is Boston Stamp Album for the Postage Stamps of all Nations. Boston William H. Hill, JR. and Co 30 and 32 cornill. 1866

Thanks for any help
Doug

I know nothing specifically about the album to which you refer, but there are some references to it on the internet.

First, there's this ad from William H. Hill, Jr. & Co. stationer and bookseller that describes the album:

Second, there's reference to it in a 1917 article in Mekeel's Weekly Stamp News:

Finally (although it has nothing to do with the album), I was interested in the history of the Boston, Massachusetts stationer and bookseller, William H. Hill, Jr., which it would seem was quite a wealthy gentleman in his time, as suggested by this 1888 news article in the Boston Daily Globe, following the death of his father:

Does anyone have a scan of a page or two from the album? I've seen a couple that were 1880's vintage.

This is purportedly the first printed stamp album.

Thank you for the responses.... I am in possession of this stamp album. I will take some pictures and try to get them scanned. The advertisement that was shown is in the front of the album after the title page. Anyone know the approximate value of something like this? There are some stamps still in the album, most have been removed. There are 5 from france, 2 from germany 1 from russia and a couple from sweden and switzerland.

Thanks

Given scans of the stamps, I'm sure folks will be able to give you some ballpark figures based on their type and condition. I'm sure there will be bidders on the album as a philatelic historical item, obviously not something with a generous pricing history though. Would love to see the photos. John

I have heard rumors that there are collectors of stamp albums although I have never encountered one in person or on the internet. Most stamp albums tend to be valued by the contents, not by the album itself. If it is obvious that stamps have been removed it is a pretty safe guess that those stamps remaining are common, with negligible value. However, final judgement should be held until pictures are available.

Thank you for the responses to this topic. From the responses I have seen I am guessing there is little interest. I will look at it from the perspective of it being an old book. It is worth noting that one of the countries listed is the Confederate States of America. I would love to add scans... but am technically deficient and do not know how. I have taken several pictures, if someone wants to send me their email, I will forward pictures on to them to have them scanned.

Thanks
