US 721 Gripper Crack (Or Just Scratch?)

An interesting location. I'm guessing that it is just a scratch from the cancellation process, but the proximity to the joint line had me wondering. Also, the scratch is slightly curved. Odd.

That is probably not a gripper crack. A gripper crack is usually a whole lot thinner. It looks much more like something scraped over the stamp, like maybe the cancelling device? Which is what you already decided!

Newby here and I know my opinion doesn't mean much, but would the cancellation device actually move the ink? When looking at the pictures it looks like the ink was moved thru the design so to speak when the ink was still wet. The device wouldn't make a smear on the ink would it, being the ink was dry at the time of cancellation. To me again being a Newby it looks like to be done when the ink was wet and then if so, could it not be during the printing process like a gripper or something else during the printing time?
