Definitely Type 1a, #19. It is complete on the bottom-- both scrolls are complete, and the relief flaw right under the "U" in U.S. is visible (barely on this copy). It can't be a Type 1, because it doesn't look like a Plate 12 stamp, which were mostly darker blue and poor printing. A Plate 4 stamp, and if the top were showing, it would be incomplete.....
Nice catch, Kevin.....
Hope this helps, Ray |

I would have guessed the 1c blue to be a Scott 18, but it sounds like this is coming from the bottom row of plate 4 then (Scott 19)?

I'm not seeing the relief flaw at all. I've blown the image up and still can't see it so I'm not convinced it's a 1A. |

Stallzer, it isn't really noticeable in this image, but it's there, in the spot where it's supposed to be, and it's definitely a bottom row stamp: Hope this helps.....Ray |

How about this flawed stamp listed as a #24 that I bought yesterday, and paid $40 for? Not a great copy, but I didn't have one of these in the past. Who knows what plate this type comes from? For those who want to know....it's not a #24.....so what is it? Ray |

A type I from Plate 12 would also have the secret mark, which this stamp does not have. It is a #19.... no question about it.
Ray, I saw your new "24" but there were a couple people, including you, that wanted it worse than me. |

Congrats Ray! Whether this is your 1st or 100th #19, it is a find of a lifetime at that price! Quote: Ray, I saw your new "24" but there were a couple people, including you, that wanted it worse than me. Winston, you are a gentleman and a scholar. The temptation to snatch that one up to resell would be too much for most. You have my utmost respect! Brian |

Brian, Thank you but you give me too much credit. Buying and reselling improperly identified stamps is something I do occasionally. It isn't as lucrative as you think though. Ray's stamp isn't a #19. I wouldn't have let him get it that cheap. |

If Winston would've let me buy a 19 that cheap, I would've lost all my faith in him! It's from plate 1 late and wish I could see the curved line at the top because the re-cut isn't real strong on the bottom, but it's a type IV, #23.......
Hope this helps, Ray |

Sorry about the confusion. The #19 that I was referring to was the first 1c 1857 stamp posted on the first page of this thread. |
