No, to my underatanding a first day cover is an envelope that has a stamp on it and the stamp is canceled on the first day that the stamp was issued. There is usually a special cancel that says "first day of issue" or something like that. Also a lot of private vendors/businesses make envelopes up in advance of the first day of issue and they will put a design on the envelope that has to do with the particular stamp. Then they'll put the stamp on it and have it cancelled with the first day cancel. You should be able to see many examples on e-bay if you do a search for "first day covers".
