He claims four stamps have no grill. They also have no cert and at least one of them is obviously postally used. One of them looks like it has a flattened grill that I can see.

The collection also looks remaindered. The best items from the collection have already been cherrypicked (except, mysteriously, the no grill items).

Still, I have never seen so many 114's in one place like that before.

Umm, well, there are some nice cancellations. Love the shield ones. But I couldn't help but think, "why"? This seems like saying you have the largest collection of shoe laces.
I only saw the back of the 'no grill' stamps. Are they used? If they are used, like we have discussed here, they are un-certifiable

A few pages down is a page of four stamps that says "No grill"

They are arranged in a diamond pattern. The one on the right is obviously used. Here is what it looks like.

I will sell my shoelace collection for a discounted price of $100.00. This is exactly how much I would bid for the lot. Looks like even trade...K

I have at least 4 used 114's with "no grill". I am certain they once had a grill but [edit: they are no longer] discernible. I wouldn't trust the 4 in this collection to be any different.

Yeah . . I had a feeling it would. I suspect he is hoping for an offer of at least 25% of asking price.

And a correct opinion it would be! Stallzer is right on track with the comment on "$2 stamps". It is actually worse than that - there are diminishing returns on a collection this size.

I have more than 500 114s now, including mint blocks of 4, essays, proofs, used blocks, strips, and pairs - not to mention two "no grill" stamps, but I have no illusion about the value of my collection and it isn't half or even a quarter of this asking price.

I think a fair market value for this collection is in the $1500-$2000 range, but don't believe it would even get that much at auction.

Still, it's a great collection!

Brian

Smauggie,
Be prepared to dig deep. The guy has some good stuff. I have bid many times in his auctions and only had the winning bid a few times. He has a lot of followers and it is not unusual for one of his listings to get over 30 bids.

Its worth pointing out that the one used 114 that was certified by the PF came off of a cover with most of its' original gum remaining. Unless a 114 has OG, it's not going to get a cert as a no grill.

A collection like this catalogs about $18,000 less the four "without grill" which no dealer would consider to be anything but an ordinary stamp that was ironed out. It would probably have an estimate of $3000-$4000 and open at 80% of the low estimate if it had no bids. Someone MIGHT be willing for $3000 or thereabouts. Maybe.

$3000.00 would buy many better issues than those. IMHO

I completely agree, I was just putting out what I think would happen at an auction house.
