I have checked the perforations at 12 and there is no watermark. I believe this stamp to be a J37. What do you think?

It's either J50 or J58. Since I do not know your level of skill at watermarking US stamps I will point out that the single line watermark can be quite difficult to observe at times, especially with a fairly heavy cancel. The pattern of the watermarked letters lead to there being several stamps per sheet with the watermark on the edges of the stamp, or sometimes only in the tips of the corners. I would also recommend using a perf gauge rather than a ruler to measure the perfs.

I think it likely that this stamp is perf 11.

My error, I meant J38. But I do believe it is perf 11 and not 12, a J67.

I agree with the J67. The perf gauge can be estimated by counting the number of perfs (13) that occur along the ruler distance of 2.4cm. A bit of arithmetic makes the perf gauge about 10.83 (13*2/2.4) ... hence, probably 11.

With stamps of this size, counting the horizontal perforations will tell you what the gauge is. There are 11 valleys (holes) on this stamp.

Thanks revcollector! I am so accustomed to using a perf gauge that I never realized the obvious (in retrospect) fact that, if a stamp measures just slightly more than 2 cm, you can simply count the perfs. And there are lots of stamps of this size.

It's very helpful when looking at Washington-Franklins without a gauge handy.
