The wrapper around the roll states "1 C. (1-cent) stamps rolled lengthwise". #408 is hand written on the roll. 408(E) and 408(S) are older Scott Catalogue designation for todays Scott numbers 408V and 408H. 408E or 408V are the designations for a vertical (lengthwise) coil roll of imperforate Scott #408. 408V seems to be more common than 408H. This is of course assuming the hand written #408 on the wrapper is correct. If what's written is wrong, it could be 314V, 343V, or 383V. There were only 5 rolls of 314V made, I doubt it would be that one. There would be past-up pairs every 20 stamps in the roll.
