I'm not sure if this link has been shared before, but seeing as there are many collectors interested in fancy cancels, here's a free online resource that can help with identifying some of them:

Wow - that's great to know - now it's on my favorites bar! I have this book (hard copy) and it's out of print (Can typically get it for $50 - $75 when available). I didn't know it was available in the public domain for free.

Thanks for the link!

Now I know this one is called Wheel Of Fortune. Wish I had it on the cover.

Many of the fancy cancels of the 1800s were hand-carved (boxwood, bottle-stoppers, etc.), but this "wheel of fortune" cancel was a manufactured rubber cancel, known to be used by more than 300 different towns (as described in the referenced book in this thread authored by James M. Cole). I agree, it would be great to have this cancel on cover.

Folks.... Please note that there is a tremendous difference between a book being made available online free of charge and a book being "public domain." The Cole book is still copyright protected, so use it to your benefit, just don't go trying to publish it.

Thanks for the clarification - looks like I may have assumed incorrectly! I agree, if it still copyright protected, one should only use the info for their own use.

The US Classic Postal Society has a terrific on-line selection of Philatelic reference material. It can be seen here;
