Has anyone else besides T360 received any non-philatelic first day covers? Now those would be a nice addition to my collection. |

Here are a few more. I can't stop now. I made this cachet myself. Image: ALflagCover.jpg87.81 KB These 2 were made by cachet hand paint artist Nirlay Image: Nirlay.jpg37.25 KB Here is my Springpatch Local Post First Day of Operation cover Image: SpringpatchLPcover.jpg21.06 KB The next 2 images is the front and back of the Springfield Philatelic Society 200th birthday cover & postmark Image: SPSbirthday.jpg19.3 KB Image: SPSbirthdayback.jpg18.28 KB The last one is from an ACE member who goes by the handle of Big Dewey. It features the USS Abraham Lincoln. Image: USSalCover.jpg35.91 KB OOPS, one more. It is the USPS insert packed with each shrinkwrapped package of 2,000 panes of Abraham Lincoln stamps. There are 6 different pane positions and I have 1 card for each position. Image: USPSinsert.jpg29.82 KB I am now currently out of stamps and need to buy more. |

David, The USS Lincoln cover was a freebie from a ship cancel collector I know. I was very pleased with it. I do have a couple postmarks from the ship in my collection. |

Thanks for posting my cover, looks good :-)
Yes, I would definitely be visiting this group often, but I was quite taken aback with the links rule and posting images rule. I am quite eager to get past the 50 posts and post some images. |

Tina, A "non-philatelic first day cover" would be a letter or stamped item sent through the mailstream with a stamp issued and postmarked on its first day of sale. It could be either business or personal coorespondance. For instance, if someone bought the Lincoln stamps on 2/9/09 and mailed a letter to someone that same day and the Lincoln stamp used on cover is postmarked 2/9/09. It looks like any other ordinary envelope, stamp, and postmark you could receive from a non collector point of view. It could also be considered a unofficial first day of sale postmark. Usually, the sender would not have a cachet or text on the cover regarding it being the first day of sale. I hope this helps. |

Thank you stamperdude. I did not know that there was such a thing as an unofficial first day cover. SO basically it is just by coincidence that the mail was sent on the first day of issue |

Yep, that would be 1 explanation...another could be that a stamp collector did it intentionally. Just for the fun of it. |
