Maybe it depends on the collector's preference on whether to collect the mailed ones or the un-mailed ones?

G'Day all Tina in the early day's here in Australia people had to create first day covers by mailing the covers to themselves on the day of issue so that's why a lot of F. D. covers have addresses I think it would be the same in the states I could be wrong so in reality it depends on the collector and what there collecting

Yes, in the states most collectors had to mail an addressed cover to the FD city for the postmark and have it returned back to them. I do not mind an addressed FDC as long as someone has not tried to erase it, mark it out, or damage the cover trying to remove it. I have both.

I received a cover back today for the Lincoln Boyhood Station 2/9 from Lincoln City IN. It arrived with a bonus the official town's cachet cover with the 2/12 postmark! The postmaster enclosed a letter stating that "my sons collects envelopes with pictures & nice cancellations in cub scouts. I gave him your envelope you mailed your cancellations in. He wanted to give you this one." I had sent my cover inside an extra Lincoln cachet cover I had with a Lincoln stamp and I'm sure a Springfield IL sprayon cancel. I will post an image later.

I have sent my own covers for each of the Abraham Lincoln pictorial postmarks from February to date. The cover has my 2nd Springpatch Local Post stamp design which is the same image as my 1st but on white paper and postmarked with the same Springpatch Lincoln postmark in red ink.
