Yes, it is meant to be there. Numbered and lettered obliterators like the target cancel you show identified the clerk or window that canceled the stamp. |

You don't see this in other cancels for one main reason: killers with numerals were mainly used in larger post offices.

There is no numerals in that cancel whatsoever! It's simply a double struck / overstruck 4 ring target cancel. |

I dont know its very clear for me that the number 2 at least exist there, I can see even without large scan.
Maybe its the stamp fog upon my eyes!

I can see a 2 but I think it's kind of like looking for designs in the clouds where if you look long enough, you can see almost anything. Now that I see it though, it's hard not for it to stick out. Looks pretty cool Here's the 2 that I see: |

That is just a inking optical illusion. There were no numbers/letters "micro-printed" into the rings. This is a common 4 circle target cancel. Sorry... |

Could be anything none of us were around in 1910 to say with 100% certainty what it is or say that is isn't there. Maybe carved into the cork cancel, maybe stamped or produced under the bullseye cancel, who knows. Maybe a fluke.
We can only assume and give a best guess. No one knows with certainty it is or isn't something, clear 2 seen regardless of any assumptions how it got there. It is there, it does exist, others see it, (the anomaly within the cancel).
Cool, good eye. Could be a collection to do, anomalies within cancels, regardless weather meant to be there or not. |

You see what "appears" to be a "2"... That is not the intention of this cancel. It is a common 4 ring cancel.... It is just underinked in that area....period. |

I agree with Kevin. This type of target cancel was used by numerous post offices during this period (which by the way, was the 1880s, not 1910 as someone mentioned). One can "imagine" seeing all kinds of objects, letters, numbers, etc in cancels, but unless they are well defined, they are not very collectible for most. Clarity of strike is the bedrock of fancy cancel collecting. Partial or unclear strikes are undesirable for most collectors.
But that being said, there is nothing to stop anyone from collecting whatever they please, which is why it's such a great hobby. Everyone is entitled to collect WHAT they please, HOW they please! |

We see a 2. It is a fun Hobby and no one way of doing it for sure, what we make it, each our own, collecting these anomalies would be fun. |
