I have 2 stamps scott number 603 that are connected, would they be considered a coil line pair? From what I have read is that a line pair had a black line where the pair connects. Mine do not have a black line. And the 2 catalogs that I sometimes order stamps from list these for sale at opposite sides of the scale, example one has it for 14.00 and the other for 39.50 so I was just curious what would make this pair of stamps so different in price from one catalog to the next. They are both up to date catalogs as I do order from them once in a while. I do not have a scott catalog for prices. This is not a real good picture but I wanted to show what it looked like.

Yours is just a pair, not a line pair. The "line" between stamps on line pairs is in the printed color, not black. A Scott 603 line pair would look like this:

Hi Carabop. As srailkb said, your pair is not a line pair. A line pair would show a line in between the stamps in the color of the stamps. It got there because ink collected in the space where two plates were connected together. The difference in price may be because line pairs are graded by quality. If the line is exactly in the middle of the perforations it is much more priced than one where the perfs do not line up!

Thank you for the information, now I know the difference. So would the pricing be $14.00 for just the pair and the 39.50 be for a line pair?

Yes, that sounds about right (don't have the latest catalogs in front of me.)

Please note that the Line Pairs are sometimes referred to as Joint Line Pairs. Same thing ... just a longer phrase.

Note: My 2011 Scott Specialized shows this a $8.00 for a pair, and $25.00 for a Joint Line Pair. If Never Hinged, twice as much.

My 2013 Scott Specialized shows the same values as the 2011 catalog referred to in the previous post.

I still find it quite incredible as to how "never hinged" doubles the catalog value.

The price is the same in the 2014 U.S. Specialized.

Same price in the 2015 Specialized. $8 OG, $16 OG NH.

I suspect actual market value is less.

Not that these changes are that meaningful, but for historical reference I have an old 2002 Scott Specialized and the values for #603 at that time were $9 for a Pair and $26.50 for a Joint Line Pair. If Never Hinged, the values were $14 and $42.50 respectively.

I find it interesting that the hinged pairs were worth more in 2002 than in 2014, but the never hinged pairs are worth more today. I guess it all is based on the demand for never hinged specimens today which now command higher prices.
