776, I think that would be a simple offset. Stamps stacked while wet, and ink transfers front the stamp on the bottom to the stamp on the top.

Kevin, I think you've asked for plenty of help, and members have given it freely.
Civility is the order of the day, no?

Common stamp, off center on two sides, on a relatively early paper with some offset on the reverse. Plate was not wiped very well either. No double transfer. Cats $9, retail value about $2-$3.

jamesw....I have asked for help in a field that I do not have any
reference or knowledge of.....
When a person can answer a question about a US #62B, plating 1c Franklin imperfs, etc.....the question about this offset is a beginner question.

Also....look at my record here.
I have answered HUNDREDS of US questions...
I do not need help in that field.
BUT I do thank all that answered my Canadian questions.

Have a great day....

And it could very well be that Mr Stamps776 didn't know the answer to this question. Which wasn't a silly question. We all have knowledge in different areas. I'm only suggesting this forum works better when we respond to each other with respect.

There are no silly questions; sometimes there are silly answers though.

stamps776, please don't be put off by the harsh (and completely inappropriate, in my opinion) initial response you received. No question is a dumb one, and being an expert in one area doesn't mean you can't have questions in others.

Ask away...

Yes, ask questions. Better to do that than be an arrogant know-it-all and still get it wrong. This is a heavily inked stamp printed on a thin paper. What you are seeing is not set-off ink but actually ink bleeding through the paper from the front.

sinclair2010, your assessment seems to be correct. The chances of an underlying sheet producing a near mirror image on the back due to ink offset seems unlikely. I agree that it appears to be ink bleed through the paper.

If it were ink offset, I believe that we would expect an almost "negative" effect due to the depressions encountered from the engraved/relief printing.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.
