Hello stallzer, I was referring to my link higher up on the thread:

I love the 1847USA site, the description for the type 1A and type II are exactly the same so how is one supposed to tell the difference between the two ?

There are other areas that distinguish them:

Here's the link to area 6:

Here's the link to area 7:

Here's the link to area 9:

?? I have no clue what you are referring to. I clicked on the link that Disi123 posted, http://1847usa.com/washfrank/2cT1_3/2cA04.htm

The descriptions given for the types I listed above are identical. I realize it is just describing the Toga button but it just amuses me a bit.

That link (toga button) is a quick way to identify them, but it isn't definitive.

The best way to identify a Type II is that it only exists on rotary prints. I.E. 454, 487, 491, and 539. Clark pointed that out. I had not noticed it before.

I think that your confusion may be because the Ia and II are distinguished by flat vs. rotary printing. 1847.com doesn't explicitly make that distinction to be obvious in my first link to Gar nor in the link that disi posted.

A flowchart with links to each step would make it clearer. 1847.com isn't perfect, but it's the best resource that I have found so far.
