I came across this Scott 555 Precancel and can't locate a city in any of my searches which seems correct. Any assistance would be appreciated.

I thought of "SCHENECTADY" but the letters just don't seem to be right. If I follow whats after SCHE it doesn't look like n but more like an LY and then there seems to be a space and another word begins.

But notice that AHEAD of the town name the last two letters of its name appear, and they are rather clear as "DY." Given the gap in the word there was some problem with the printing at that spot, so it is not hard to imagine that a letter "N" may have broken up as a vertical next to a diagonal. The letters just past the gap also appear to be a "CTI/A" combination. which continues as "DY" on the other side of the perfs, as we saw on the left.

I think SCHE(NE)CTADY is the most likely candidate.

My problem, not the stamp's. It has a pointy-headed "A" there, which even I can see.

seems like a larger than normal space between the N and the Y of N.Y.

If you found one with normal/narrow NY spacing you would have a rare stamp - all found so far are wide.
