Scott's Specialized lists color shades for many classic US stamps, but they do not have their own minor letter listings. For example, on the 1898 Trans-Mississippi issue, you have 285 listed as dark yellow green, and then 2 shades listed : yellow green and green. These 2 shades are not given minor variety status.
So my question is how best to place these in the album I am making using lighhouse vario pages. Should I include the shades right after the base stamp, or should I keep the original set together and then group the shade varieties of all the values in the set in a separate section.
For the Trans-Mississippis this means having layouts that look like one of these two schematics
This has been a question I have had regarding stamps from other countries as well. Generally I keep the set together with the main colors and add additional colors on the bottom, your Version 1.
If you are able to determine the chronological sequence of each shade for each denomination, then you might be able to group them by set according to that chronology. That's a bit of a stretch for most folks. Failing that, I would group them by denomination with the earliest shade flanked by the recognized/listed other shades.
If you just want to follow the catalog and group according to the listed order, then your version 1 would get you there.
Version 2 has no good rationale behind it, inasmuch as the shades are not supplementary but rather reflect different printings. They are essentially different production states.
