There does not seem to be an easy way to differentiate between the v and c plate varieties of 4704 issued in 2012, unless one has the full panes to compare (given the different plate numbers printed on the margins). The die cuts and color shadings of the two varieties seem identical to me.

Is this true or am I missing something?

It appears you are correct. This is quoted from the APNSS (American Plate Number Single Society) listing for this issue:

Quote:
Linn's (3/7/14) reports a reprint of the 2012 (Forever) Purple Heart pane of 20, Scott 4704. The original Ashton-Potter USA Avery printing sold for 45˘ and had plate number P111111 V111111. The new printing is by CCL and has plate number C111111. There is no difference in the paper, die cut, tagging or other attributes of the stamps.

Likewise, it is similarly documented in this Linn's Stamp News article:

Quote:
Individual stamps from the two versions are indistinguishable: The die cuts, tagging, year date and design are all the same.

Thanks wt1 for the confirmation. However, I should note that the two plate varieties are v and c as mentioned in my original post, not p and c as reported by Linn's which you quoted.

The plate varieties "V" and "C" are correct. The quote that mentioned "P" was from the APNSS website, obviously in error as they also incorrectly mentioned it was a Ashton-Potter issue, which it was not ... it was a Avery issue ((V) prefix) that changed when they became CCL Label ((C) prefix).

Bottom line is that the Linn's article is correct, as they accurately mentioned the "V" and C" prefixes.

To avoid any confusion, I've edited the earlier post to correctly reference the proper prefixes.
