I'm fairly new to philately, and very new to this forum, so pardon me if my question seems a bit out of it.

while making a spreadsheet of my stamps in my Mystic Stamps American Heritage against the stamps listed in my 2009 Scott Catalog and the on-line Mystic American catalog, I've found that my American Heritage page shows John J. Pershing on Scott 1042A, while Mystic on-line identifies it as Scott 1214.

My Scott Catalog contains the note "Many collectors do not consider No. 1042A to be part of the Liberty issue. Instead, they prefer to group it with Nos. 1209 and 1213."

Did Scott eventually renumber this stamp?

BTW, I developed this Excel spreadsheet to identify which stamps I have, which are missing, the current price of these stamps from Mystic, and which page of my AmHer binder the stamps appear on. This way I don't have to disturb my stamps too often just to see what I want to get in my next purchase or kiloware spree.

Read down through at least the first page. wt1 I believe mentions the change and why. I hope this helps you?

The Pershing stamp was renumbered a few years ago for exactly the reason you surmise.

Correct. The Pershing stamp is now No. 1214. In my 2013 Scott Specialized Catalog of US Stamps there is a note under what had been No. 1042A to the effect that:

Quote:
The 8c John J. Pershing stamp, formerly No. 1042A, is now included with the regular issue of 1961-66. See No. 1214.

Unfortunately, I got the recently published 2014 Postal Service Guide to US Stamps and in that catalog the Pershing stamp is still referenced as No. 1042A, with No. 1214 listed as "unassigned".

I thought the Postal Service Guide to US Stamps was based on the Scott Catalog and it would seem enough time has elapsed that such a change should have been made to the Postal Service Guide by now, but apparently not.

In fact, for anyone thinking of getting the 2014 Postal Service Guide to US Stamps, there are other changes that the Scott Specialized Catalog has included for years that are not yet referenced in the 2014 Postal Service Guide. One example is in the varieties of the American Eagle (25c) Presorted First Class Stamps, that the Postal Service Guide refers to as 3801a (Strip of 10, #3792-3801, issued 06/26/2003), yet there is a second reference to 3801a for the gold background and green American Eagle (25c) Presorted First Class Stamp issued 08/05/2005, which of course cannot be. Clarification is shown in the Scott Specialized Catalog as far back as 2013 when 3792a through 3801a refers to the tagged variety of the stamps and 3801b now designates (Strip of 10, #3792-3801) and 3801c now designates (Strip of 10, #3792a-3801a).

To further complicate things, the Scott Specialized Catalog renumbered the "2005" dated American Eagle (25c) Presorted First Class stamps 3792d to 3801d and now designates 3801de (Strip of 10, #3792d-3801d) whereas this renumbering is not referenced in the 2014 Postal Service Guide, rendering it less relevant, especially for these modern issue varieties.

Do these renumbering cases occur very often? I collect only US and decided to not collect anything issued after 12-31-1999. When I bought a used 2011 Specialized in great shape, I assumed it would cover everything I collect.

It seems to happening a lot more lately. In fact, the 2015 Scott Specialized is supposed to have a complete re-work of the Liberty Series (1954-68).

Although I haven't yet seen it, it was briefly reported on page 3 at this previous thread:

Due to the cost, I only purchase a new Scott specialized every 5 or 6 years. In order to keep up with "renumbering", every year I consult my public library's copy of the latest Scott US Specialized. There is a short section in the INTRODUCTION titled Additions, Deletions & Number Changes. This usually consists of a single page. I either take notes or photocopy the page(s). This was especially useful this year due to the renumbering of the Liberty Series.
