I find this stuff fascinating. The Scott #214 was printed 1887-90, correct?
The one I have below is postmarked 1909.
Just thought I'd share it.

Stampcrow -
Ahhh. You have chosen one of my favorite 19th century stamps.
Will try to provide a scan on Wednesday of a similar out-of-the-period use.
Some serious students of it may yet comment on how it was often used by collectors and dealers on mail when the 3c rate came into effect, and by others who used it while it was current in multiples on heavier envelopes, overseas uses, etc etc.
I may be corrected but it seemed this was the only stamp ever printed solely in this color.
Bill

I stand properly corrected.
I like to think of #214 as "bold vermillion."

It really is an eye pleasing stamp. Not mine in particular. The cancel takes away from it. And my pic doesn't do it justice. The contrast of the shading, in person, is nice.

Kevin, at times your "curtness" can be perceived as detracting and/or inflammatory. Regardless, I believe that you intend for each of your contributions to be based in logic.

I perceive wbrob's response as acknowledging the logic in your reply and responding to it with elaboration.

I may be wrong in my perceptions because we don't get any body language to help us understand an Internet speaker's intonation. It's always difficult to perceive the intonation of a forum post.

P.S. Are you going to choose an avatar for me to adopt? Given the current events, perhaps the design of a French flag may be appropriate? Maybe the Overrun Country series? Maybe a 1922 4˘ Martha Washington?

Kevin - your first post and last post are both accurate and courteous.
My "score" post should have had a attached.
Hey, I have enjoyed this site so much I won't post anything that might be construed as a 'wise guy' response.
to you and everyone: I am a very serious philatelist with some occasional comments that may have a silent wink or smile embedded. the 1 to 0 was one of them.
historical: your "I perceive wbrob's response as acknowledging the logic in your reply and responding to it with elaboration." is exactly what I had intended.
all is well. onward.
Bill

So, the 3c vermilion is one of your favorite stamps. You have that in common with Dr. H.A. Davis, a former APS secretary and board member who wrote about how his interest was instrumental in helping him woo and win his wife Madge. He wrote about it in 1922.

So what about #214 is intriguing to you?

Essay -
when I was a kid I was excited to discover there was a non-green 3c Banknote sort of hidden in the catalog after the major banknotes and before the ABN definitive set of 1890. when I saw one face to face I loved it.
then I learned that it had various uses but very seldom single use on a 'regular' letter. I tried to pick up as many as I could; then found a couple on cover which I thought were really neat.
Fast forward many decades and I still have a couple of covers (didn't unearth them for showing here yet). My current collecting has nothing to do with that stamp now but like most collectors I guess, some things are just kept for old time's sake.
And somewhere I have a copy of the Davis booklet. Loved his story about piling them up by the hundreds as a young man.

I didn't express my thoughts in the easiest to understand manner. Regardless, I think that you and I both feel that there is no contest occurring.

In essence, there is no conflict between any of us in this discussion and I probably should not have commented.

What I was trying to achieve was to encourage your logical contribution for just that and to point out that I perceived that your comment was received by wbrob in an objective manner.

Regardless of all of the above, I wanted to communicate to you that I appreciate your input regardless of how you present it. In an indirect way I was trying to compliment you.

It has now been many months and a few queries from me about the avatar thing. So far you have abstained from commenting on it. It is now apparent to me that it is a "non-issue" for you. I will not mention it again.

Kevin, I respect your opinion just as much as everyone else that contributes to this forum. I apologize that I didn't express that clearly.
