Hi guys..And our American friends..Just was just looking for information to place on my Nova Scotia Stamp sheets and came across this..Good info.

Does this mean the very first American Post Office was originally opened up in Halifax Nova Scotia, Canada..??

The quote is poorly written. They are trying to say that the first post office in what is now Canada was established in Halifax in 1754. Franklin was appointed the Postmaster in Philadelphia starting in 1737. Boston had a postmaster in 1639. I don't know if Boston was the earliest, but it is 115 years before the Halifax date quoted.

It all comes down to how you describe America.

Since you are including both Canada and the British colonies that later became the United States of America I would also include Panama into America as well (the southernmost country in North America). By the end of the 1500's there was a sufregan post office of the Spanish court in Nueva Granada (the territorial name of the new world as headquartered in Panama.

For the first post office in what would become the United States of America, this webpage says Boston has that claim to fame.

"America" is a name applying to continents. Not a country.

There's no clear-cut single answer to this. As suggested in earlier posts if you use the term "America" vs. "United States", different answers apply. The earliest post offices provided "irregular" mail service at best, so there were a number of "firsts" in early days of the mail.

To lend credence to the initial post suggesting Nova Scotia, it is explained a bit further here:

On the other hand, the US Postal Service website explains the postal service of Colonial Times thusly:

An education with nothing really answered or clear cut for sure. Isn't stamp collecting and it's history educational, interesting and fun?

I've been studying Canadian history and I just learned last night that Canada spent(?846 Million Dollars) ? to quickly expand)the railroad out to British Columbia because Canada was afraid they was going to lose that Territory to the U.S. It was cut off from the rest of Canada because of the Mountains. Rockies I assume. The book isn't here where I am and too far for me to walk to get it. Also Nova Scotia was flirting with joining in as the 14th colony to form the original U.S.
breaking away from England , Great Britain.

The old original Post Offices was just a desk in the corner of someones living room. Or out on the front porch of someone's house.
