Hi guys...I know these are really Scott # 499's but can you tell me how to recognize them as such..Thanks

The first one is an offset I believe, not a 499.

Measurement has nothing to do with the appearance. In this case observation is the key. The toga button in the left stamp has a sharp outline with a ring of unprinted area surrounding the vertical lines in the center. The engraved stamp on the right does not have a sharply outlined toga button with an unprinted area surrounding the vertical lines. Also, the offset stamp has a break in the left 2, making it a type V or Va depending on the configuration of dots on Washington's nose.

Right Stamp. Type Va, #528. Note the 2 dots missing on the 5th. row down on the nose.

Ok Al E. Gator...Great, the one is a #528va..got that by the dots on the nose...
So the other is a regular 499 then..?

If its perf. 11 and no watermark, its a #499
