during the 1930's things were tough and people went to see a 5 cent movie to take their minds off their troubles...well, I dont attend as many movies as I did 20 years ago or so..but I find collecting stamps helps to keep the negative thoughts away..we spend on taxes and everyday bills..why deny ourselves a little pleasure and spend some of that money on something we enjoy ????

I agree. I think this is one reason why I decided to take up the hobby again...Being away from my own country and apart from my family and loved ones is really hard. Despite trying to keep myself busy in school related activities, I could not restrain myself from missing the people who I really care about. But when I started to take up stamp collecting again, it made me divert my attention to something else (though I still miss them ofcurse but I just leaned how to handle the feeling). Even better, stamp collecting gave me something to talk about with my family by letting them now how I am doing as a re-invented collector |

Same here
I spend most of my evenings doing something stamp related. It's a great outlet after a long day at work.

I agree, it's easy to get lost with your stamps. Maybe that's why I've fought it for so long! Time is as rare a commodity as "disposable" income!
Another positive aspect of collecting is that it's something Tom and I can do separately yet together. Even when we get too old and decrepit for shuffleboard, hopefully we'll still be able to wrangle a pair of tongs! |

I too agree! I am brand new to collecting bug, but I think I have been bitten pretty hard! I was up until 3am last night on the computer reading about the stamps I have and stalking ebay. I just think the world of stamp collecting is so interesting, I wish they could talk! |

Me too, Dianne! Tomorrow is the auction at the OPS... I'm the auctioneer. Nani (my girlfriend) likes to work on stamps with me, too. David |

Well, thank you Philb. I have great vibes about this message board, too. I feel like I am not a "newbie" here, like you usually do when you are new on a forum. I belong to 2 scrapbook ones that I've been on for years, and one of them, I still feel like a "stranger". $175 was a little steep for me right now, but maybe in the future, I will invest in "better" ones.
Right now, I would rather buy stamps, lol!
I just hope you all don't get tired of me asking so many questions.
I am also working on some bookmarks with stamp collages on them. |
