Hi guys...I am getting a little bit more relaxed with American stamps..This stamp has no grill that I can see...Thanks for any help
Robert

This is a note in Scotts that shows a little line in the frame that makes it a possible Scott #157...See chart and picture below.

Sometimes we miss seeing the forest through the trees! The stamp you have is the wrong color to be either 135 or 157. This one is 178 or 183.

Cheers!

Yeah, for this stamp the vermillion color means it has to be a 178 or 183.

However, for future reference when looking at brownish shades of this stamp, the Scott criterion of "a small diagonal line" isn't terribly useful. It's more accurate to say that on National printings, the lines do not meet at the corner, while on later printings (Continental & American), they do meet. Brookman made this observation 70 years ago, and it has been repeated in the Micarelli/Scott Identification Guide to US Stamps. It's baffling to me that the Scott Specialized Catalog still hasn't been updated to reflect this.
