I also like the negative "S", and the "2" in dial killer on the 2c Green Scott 213.
Something I have observed is that the "W", "E", "N" and "S" are often associated with railway cancels denoting direction of travel, West, East, North and South.

Quote: I would think that the negative "s" is the numeral "2" rohumpy...You really think my stamp is a "2" and not a "S"..Cant see what you are seeing..Here is my cancel and the double "S" cancel from the Stamparama web site to compare. |

Quote: I would think that the negative "s" is the numeral "2" Did you mean the numeral 2 in reverse? Looks like a S because either end is curved and not a straight line as in most numeral 2. mho |

Don,
Where are you getting those "tracings" you have beside each mark? Skinner-Enos and Cole? Something else? Are you scanning the pages for one? Inquiring minds... |

I scan them and then use CorelDraw to generate a vector graphic for each one. I an saving them all off and could export them to other formats if desired. As mentioned I still have many of the 'better' ones still to do. If anyone would like copies of these cancels I would be more than happy to post a file that contained them all. Just let me know. Don

This is an interesting discussion. I only collect V&A stamps but over the last year I have been focusing more and more on their cancels. The vast majority of these stamps were machine cancelled and only have straight or wavy lines. But from time to time I can find circular date stamps, killer cancels or slogan cancels. No particular value, just find it interesting to try to learn more about where these stamps originated.
Finding fun wherever we can. |

Don, So I am confused with your CorelDraw references. If I were doing this, it seems I would make a scan, delete out the background color of the stamp and then do some minor clean-up to the remaining cancel image, but quite a few of the "tracings" are not even close to the original. As an example, the target cancel (first page of your images, second row, at left) has an inner circle which has a completely different hole size and line thickness than the cancel on the stamp. Help lead me through this. -John |

John, if you are worried about accuracy, and is hard to see on some stamps...then just do it this way..no big deal... But, I like the way Don has presented them to us. |

Wert, Yes. That was the idea behind my question, because I believe accuracy is very important, espcecially with the tools available to do it today - as you have done. |
