This stamp is for sale on ebay as a Type III. The back identifies it as a Type IV. I'm still figuring these out, but it looks like an obvious Type I to me, and Brookman doesn't list any Type I's as being recut.

Despite the signs of a cancellation his title says the stamp is supposed to be unused. ??? And the descriptive notes refer to "expertly added frame lines". ! Tread with caution, although Eugene is pretty good about returns. As for positive ID, this one would need to be in hand or in a much larger, brighter image for me. But it is outside my field, so others may have more to say.

Here's another type III from the same seller: http://www.ebay.com/itm/291411307473

I didn't even notice it was listed as unused! Too focused on the stamp. I sent him a message to see if he attached wrong image. Thanks essayk.

I would still like to know what stamp is shown in the image. Looks like a touched up type I.

It is clearly a paint job, with the top retouched to look like a recut Type IV. If it is an original Type I then the faker didn't know his plating from his *** Edited by Staff | The bad word filter is in place for a reason. Bypassing the filter and making the intended word obvious anyway is completely unacceptable. ***, because no C relief stamps (from the bottom row of the plate, the only row to produce Type I) were recut to become Type IV. The ornament at the top left that looks like an old-fashioned telephone receiver (see arrow) is a figment of someone's imagination--no such design element occurred on the actual stamps.

Funny Dudley. I noticed that, but wasn't comparing stamp to actual design. It looks like they lifted that from the one cent franklin.

Since no one in their right mind would do this to a Type I, it might be a very retouched type V. The design halfway down the left side looks off.

Could well be a phonied-up Type V, raymodj. The three pearls on the right side look funky-shaped to me.

That's exactly what I thought too Dudley. and the top "thingy" is really odd too...a stamp to avoid for sure.
