This two cent Jackson is on an old cover from Albany, NY. The scroll above the US has a strange deformity that I cannot find documented anywhere. Has anyone ever seen this?
I do. If you are referring to that tiny dark "dot" on the scroll? If so, are you sure it's not like a speck of dirt that you can easily remove? Is it on top of the paper, or in the paper? If in the paper, it can be a natural inclusion. It can also be a tiny stain of some sort. A clear enlargement of that area would help.
I've added another scan. The small dots won't come off so they are not loose trash anyway. The thing that puzzles me is that they are located just above a portion of the scroll that should be white, not colored.
