I ran across this stamp in a small group of Schermacks that I acquired for a few dollars. I don't usually collect these, so I've been trying to figure out if this one is worth sending in for a Cert? I believe its a Type II 320A, the perfs look good to me. They measure out correctly for a type III Schermack on my Specialty Multi Gauge. Perhaps someone with knowledge of this issue can take a look and provide some feed back.
These have always been a mystery to me and I've looked at a bunch of them. The type II, 320a, is a very common stamp and by no means worth getting a cert. However the type, 320d, is much scarcer. I've never been able to acurately distinguish the color variations.
The first image I've posted here is of a PF certified #320Ad (on cover). The second is of another#320Ad on cover that I haven't sent in yet (I've a 3rd. that's at the PF now). Although colors on monitors can appear misleading, the one you've posted appears to be a #320A rather than a #320Ad.
It does appear to be a Type II. I couldn't tell you if yours was lake or carmine in person let alone across the Interwebs. Submitting it by mail to Bill Weiss's $5 ID service (or APS's) would determine the exact Scott # and thereby the color. I'm not 100% certain on that though.
Yes, I believe you are correct. The color of mine is not carmine like your cert copies. Mine is much darker and must be lake and thus 320A. Thanks for the images. I didn't realize that the Schermack type III perfs where applied to so many different stamps.
Schermack type III perfs were used from 1908 until 1927. They are known on 35 different Scott #s. During their peak usage Schermack was perforating as many a 3 million stamps per month for use in their Mailing Machines.
