Looking through my remaining coils I found this one which looks a lot like some of the fake coils I have already. Perfs look too clean. I had it as a Scott 349. It is only 21mm wide, a bit short of the desired 21.5, appears to be a 12.66 perf.

Hopefully I'm getting better at spotting these rascals.

I agree (looks like both fake perfs & edges to me, almost certainly made from imperforate Scott 344 stock.)

If it's fake it's not an awful one. Probably worth a certificate. I suspect it's a multi-punch fake, as the top holes, with their respective imperfections, seem to match the middle row if shifted leftward. Since each row of perforations on genuine flat plate coils are perforated independently, any sign that the same device punched all the rows usually condemns the coil.

The perforations wander too much, almost to the point of being hurtful to the eyes.

guykickinit, yes imperfs were/are used to make fake perforated stamps frequently when there is a substantial value differential for the perforated coils. This stamp has been done so. The perforation hole spacings are not consistent ,some perf holes are higher or lower than others, the top and bottom perfs appear to line up with each other which could happen but usually doesn't with flat plate printings and the center perf holes appear too round and clean.

Yep - Bogus, didn't notice the wandering perfs in the middle but yes they do hurt the eyes now that you pointed it out and I looked at them for a while. So it goes in my Fake W/F stock book to accompany the other unfortunate entries. I think one day I'll post all the fakes so other folks who struggle with these can see what they look like, with a brief explanation of why they are Fakes.

Thanks for the comments.
