Scott #518 if perf 11 if no watermark; Or #423 with Double-line watermark and perf 12.

The easiest way to check the shade of a 518 is to look at an upper corner of the stamp with a high power glass, 10x or higher. If you see ANY violet tint at all it is not the deep brown. The reason to look there is the strong deep but relatively widely spaced lines of the upper ornaments make spotting the violet tint of the shade pretty obvious. The deep brown is darker with no hint of any other shade or color.

maverickx, here's a Scott 518 shade set I did years ago (from my reference collection; the 518b is certified.) You might find the image helpful.

Based on your later images, I'd guess yours is violet brown (BTW, the violet brown in my reference shade was carefully chosen -- that's the closest I could find to the 518b shade. It's not typical of most violet browns, most of which will be darker than that.)

Hi, Dave... thank you kindly... I've always thought it was likely
the violet brown, but had no means of comparison...

Concerning the block of 4, is the paper actually that pink? Or is it the result of your scanner? Or maybe my monitor.

Looks a tiny bit pink on my monitor as well, but it's the scan...
