Hey. This is fun. I'm learning how to post scans and I'm just showing some things that seem interesting to me. I hope its OK to do this.

ronv, Greetings:
Within the past 24 hours, I shamelessly posted a Pakistani aerogram I know nothing about, so go for it!
Hint: if you want to look more like a 'player', google the expo, and co-post the wiki link.
BTW: Flag cancels are a collectible topic, in & of themselves.
Cheers,

A shame that it is a cut down piece. That's a relatively scarce marking (an advertising slogan for the Panama California Expo), valued at $40 in the Flag Cancel Encyclopedia on a VF cover. There were quite a few slogan advertising machine cancels for the Panama Pacific and Panama California expositions; interesting area. |

The WikiGod says that the Panama–California Exposition closed 01/Jan/1917.
Santa Monica is >100 miles north of San Diego; perhaps the news hadn't reached them?

Hi Ronv,
The widely respected source for expo markings is Bomar and in his catalog of expo markings, yours is recorded as "SD16-06" and he has a value of $16 on card and $35 on cover with double for 1917 use.
The earliest known use of this cancel is 9 March 1916 and the last known use is 8 January 1917. The version of the catalog I'm using was updated in 2007 so the values ought not be too far adrift.
best,
Larry |

Larry is right that the Bomar catalog (the 3rd edition of which is only available on CD) is the standard for exposition markings as a whole. The Flag Cancel Encyclopedia and other machine cancel literature sometimes provides useful supplemental information, most notably Payne's "United States Promotional Slogan Cancellations 1899-1940."
One of the many accumulations I am gradually working on in hopes of an eventual exhibit is a group of the various 1899 slogans, as the birth year of the slogan cancel. Some day... |
