Here another example of the cancel "Alaska" for the Pacific Mail Steamship Company. Nothing new about this Cancel.

But there is another cancel(?), in addition to the cancel "Alaska". See the scans, I've enhanced the various orientations on the stamp in question where this extra cancel(?) is located. Now it may not be an extra cancel at all, maybe somebody was just playing around. As the words at this point do not make any sense to me. What do you think? Do you think I've gotten the right words, it is difficult to make out!

The extra words are "EACH FOR" (at top), (in the middle, I can't make out anything), at the bottom "STAMP". I call your attention to the "EACH FOR", now then the "R" looks like a "B", but I'm pretty sure it really is an "R".

So then if the Revenue Collectors Members who are experts on this issue (my focus is mostly the 1898 Series Revenue Stamps) would like to take a crack at this one, or even if Mr. Sherlock Holmes is a member he could try his luck!

Cheers

Dave

It says "place for stamp". Many documents of the period had a printed location for the stamp, this made it easier to put on without covering up something important on the document. Many of the trimmed perforated stamps that exist were not originally created to defraud collectors, but were created because of a lack of room on the document; this helped prevent that.

If the document had the words PLACE FOR STAMP and this was affixed in that area, wouldn't the printing be on the back of the stamp?

Explain please how it could be on the front.

I agree with Bart's assessment of the words. It could be offset of some sort, but in that case, it should be mirror imaged (as in the stamp was face down on whatever document had those words printed on it).

OK, I'm confused, who is Bart? Is Bart the same person as 1typesetter? or is Bart Revcollector? All these handle names are fine, but then when responding to a post if you use the real name of the person and not also include the handle name makes it very confusing for me at least.

I agree with Revcollector (I don't know his/her first name) with the words "PLACE FOR STAMP"!

I think maybe or maybe not 1typesetter (I don't know his/her first name) has a point, I will conduct a small experiment myself, and report back my finding, most likely not today as my granddaughter is coming for a visit.

I'd suggest responding or post and original post to identify as follows (using me as an example): Stampmaster (David Thompson) . . .

Cheers

David or sometimes Dave

I am Bart. It's on the front because at some point this stamp had another stamp stuck on top of it for a while and there was some offset created during the separation. The top stamp was still partly attached to a thin film of document with those words printed there.
