Simon, From looking at the pic, I'd believe it to be Scott #8. The paper here seems to be rather thick. A more detailed catalog Ma's lists an additional stamps to this basic design. This could be Ma's #11 because the note on this verity is thick paper with rough perferation. Both have the basic 12.5 perf., but your image is vary rough. Without actually seeing it up close I can't be 100% sure. I'd go with Ma's 11 which is listed with a little more $ value. Also be aware that these issues were often counterfited as well as the cancelation was too.
Thanks for your prompt reply, this forum is a great resource, I just wish I could give something back!
i am a complete novice so please ignore my ignorance, I have a couple of further questions:
What is Ma's?
i have read in scotts about counterfeit stamps can you tell me who/when this took place. were they forged during their era (for free postage), or by 'collectors' for ill gotton gains?
You'll need to decide if cost's of expertising, $35, warrants the stamps value. Chinese stamps have been doing much better in value since the average person in China now can afford time and money to collect those stamps.
I don't have the current valve of the stamp, if Scott's list is greater then $70, do it. It's value will likely continue to grow.
