hideandseeker,

That was good advice Hal gave you. But can be daunting. First step is to determine flat plate, rotary, or offset. Hal did that for you. Next step is to determine perforations. Finally, you focus in on type, if applicable. Give it a try and then get back to us! The 1847 website is very, very useful.

hideandseeker,

Before determining type, do a watermark test. The whole idea here is to narrow down the possibilities until you get there.

Washington/Franklin offset printings are not watermarked. The engraved Scott 461 and 519 are the only watermarked perf 11 stamp in the series. All perf 12 stamps in the series are flat plate. Perf 10 stamps are may be flat plate or rotary press. Rotary press printings are always taller or wider than the corresponding flat plate stamp of the same design.

First identify the printing and perforations before doing any watermarking. It is useful to dip in more expensive stamps in watermark fluid to find defects in addition to any watermarks.

Understanding the business problem faced by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing is more useful than attempting to memorize seemingly arbitrary combinations or properties like printing method, watermark or perforations.
