Anyone have any idea of the city name. I can make out Texas, but cannot find a city name. Thanks in advance for any help!

Could be Battlestamps, that PO opened in 1847 so it certainly was around when this stamp was issued. What would be the N in Sherman just doesn't look right and I had thought I saw a comma after the last letter, also what would have to be an N. Thanks, maybe more will have an idea. |

I agree 100% with Battlestamps, you have partial impressions of a parcel post roller cancel from Sherman, Texas. The town name appears about 5 times around the circumference of the hand-held roller. |

Thanks John & Battlestamp...very interesting! John, was it typical that the letters would miss (like the example I have) while being rolled. That would make sense to me. I didn't know they used a roller type. Appreciate the info.

This stamp would have been used on a box likely with other stamps to make up the full rate - which would be canceled with an undated postmarking device as parcel post matter - quite normal to use a roller device of some sort. It looks like the clerk set the device down 1/3 of the way across the stamp and then started rolling it - very likely the town name was readable on the package wrapper - he did a better job of "protecting the revenue" than providing a clear cancel for a collector. |

Could be the roller hd good ink on it to start with and ran out along the way, dpending on howmany stamps and parcle or envelope places the roller hit.
Great to see the roller as a whole, makes it easy to establish a type, placement and correct spelling of a cancel.
Wonder if you could ever find the rest of the stamps in that roller strike, it being a triple roller strike, so to speak? |
