Are the margins on this #2 typical for this issue? How much does the staining detract from the value/interest?

Looks as if he took a direct hit at Yorktown.

Aside from aesthetics, one question must be what the staining is. And is it old and halted, or could it worsen?

The top and side margins are generous for this issue.

I'm not a fan.

These aren't rare, but they are expensive. I would save up for a nice one.

You say this is in an "upcoming auction." Don't be surprised if it does "extraordinarily" well. The cover is otherwise unremarkable, but the stamp appears sound with stain(s) confined to unprinted, uncancelled areas. As-is, it might be worth $300, but a competent restoration professional will lift the stamp, freshen it up & completely remove the stains (in a virtually undetectable fashion.) In fact, we should start taking bets now on how long it will take the newly-graded XF-Superb 95 single to reappear (with an asking price/reserve of $2,500-3,000+...)

August 22nd. I will likely be there. Not because I'm interested in the #2 cover.

Hessney does a once a month stamp and coin auction. I try to get there each time. Not high end collections. But it's fun. Free coffee!

I just noticed the stray mark that runs across the entire stamp (diagonally, below George's chin - something I noticed on the larger picture of the stamp on the Auctionzip site.) Scratch my earlier comments. This isn't a good candidate for "profitable restoration."

I attend Hessney's auctions regularly - a fun country outing. They pull in a wide variety of stamp stuff. It's an honest, un-rigged operation with lots selling from surprisingly low to surprisingly high.

Update on the #2 on cover: Sold for $450.00. I was not the buyer. The buyer was not in attendance. The house refers to that as an absentee bidder.
