One of the reasons I joined here was to have an excuse to open my books after ignoring them for so long. I'm thinking it's more fun when you look with me too. So, in a binder with miscellaneous stuff on stock pages I found this thematic collection I had started and never finished. It's an attempt to collect a stamp or set from each of the emerging countries who appeared in relation to the end of the Soviet Union. So in the hopes they're not something you see everyday, here goes. Oh by the way, if you can provide #s that'd be great. I'm pretty sure they're first issues but it's been a long time. (I need a new catalog).

On March 11, 1990, Lithuania became the first Soviet republic to declare its renewed independence.
The Summer of 1991 saw many more countries follow suit:
Slovenia declared independence June 25, 1991 (from Yugoslavia)
Ukraine declared independence August 24, 1991
Russia declared independence August 24, 1991
Moldova declared independence on August 27, 1991.
Uzbekistan declared independence September 1, 1991
Macedonia declared independence on September 8, 1991. (from Yugoslavia)
Tajikistan declared independence September 9, 1991
Turkmenistan declared independence on October 27, 1991

This is as far as I got with this collection, next if I continue would be Kazakhstan, which declared independence December 16, 1991, and then the rest of the former Yugoslavia.

Lithuania

Slovenia

Ukraine

Russia

Moldova

Uzbekistan

Macedonia

Tajikistan

Turkmenistan

Hope you like,
OG

Don't you need Belarus, Estonia, Latvia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia too?
According to Wikipedia most countries declared independence in 1989 or 1990, but in most cases it was established in August 1991.

You could also add Slovakia and Czech Republic. They split up in 1992 if my memory serves me right.

I was going to ask which ones I'm forgetting. Thanks! The dates I used came from the CIA, you'd think you could trust them.

The real challenge would be to collect the central-Asian stamps postally used. You hardly see them.

How about Bosnia & Hergovina Oct. 15, 1991, Croatia June 15, 1991, Serbia defacto June 3, 2006, Montegro, June 3, 2006, & Kosovo Feb, 17, 2008.
How about Russia itself.

You could consider Timor-Lest, May 20, 2002 from Indonesia.

I broke down and ordered a new catalog so I can actually do this properly. In the meantime, while awaiting it's arrival, I've run across some more. Again I've turned to the CIA for dates. Apparently they list the enacted dates rather than dates of declaration. Regardless, they have a really cool part of their site called the world factbook, check it out sometime.

Anyway Here's what I found:
Lithuania, 11 March 1990
Estonia, 20 August 1991
Latvia, 21 August 1991
Belarus, 25 August 1991
Croatia, 25 August 1991
Armenia, 21 September 1991
Kazakhstan, 16 December 1991
Czech Republic, 1 January 1993
Chechnya, ?

Again, like before, I don't know the numbers but I guess I'll know soon enough.

Lithuania

Estonia

Latvia

Belarus

Croatia

Armenia

Kazakhstan

Czech Republic

Chechnya

And thanks much for the suggestions, I need the direction.
I seem to have whittled down the list a bit huh?
And bobgggg, nice SS!

Hope you all enjoy,
OG
