Ive just inherated a large stamp colletion from my great great great grandad lol so as you can imagine its very old and also very large, there are stamps from all over the world and some japenese ones that really seam far too big to be stamps, there are a few on lincon which I've seen on e.bay go for around 5 to 10 pounds but also seen a lincon stamp worth 1 million,
how do I tell what mine are worth ?

Your best option would be to go to your local library and check the reference section for stamp catalogues to help determine which stamps you have. In the US most collectors commonly use the World Wide Scott catalogues. Take a look at some of the previous postings regarding inheriting a stamp collection for other suggestions.

And don't worry -- you don't have one worth a million. Otherwise Grandad would have sold it

It's kind of hard to know exactly what "pretty large" is. I'm new here, so I'm not sure what the policy/practice here is. But maybe if you could provide a scan/photo of one or more of these larger than normal Japanese "stamps", someone might be able to post a reply and let you know what it is?

Also, since you are in the United Kingdom, it is more likely that your libraries have the Stanley Gibbons catalogs. Keep in mind that the SG catalogs are also their pricelist, which means that in many cases the "catalog" value not accurately reflect actual buying/selling price of other dealers. However, the relative values should give you a good idea of what is particularly valuable and what is common.

It sounds like the Cape of Good Hope stamp that you have is the 1/2p surcharged on 3p stamp below. If so, it comes in two major varieties that cannot be distinguished from front side scan. It is either watermarked crown/CC or crown/CA.

Assuming you have used stamps, the CC crown watermark catalogs at $100+, while the CA crown watermark catalogs for only a few dollars. Remember, condition is everything. Minor flaws can easily push the actual sales value of the stamp to a very small fraction of catalog.

Please feel free to post a scan of the front side of the stamp, as there are a few varieties that are also worth a significant premium (e.g., missing dash), but too many to describe (easier to check your scan).

The 5 inch Japanese item that you have is definitely not a stamp. But you got me interested in what it might be. Please post a pic of that as well if convenient. Looking forward to seeing it. Thanks!
