It does seem very odd that this stamp from 1923 is on a 1974 First Flight cover. Why would someone do this?

I'm sure both stamps were damaged, not just the Edison.

The cancel on the Edison appears to be missing in the LR corner where the corner is missing, which makes me think it was torn off after it was cancelled. The C6 does not appear damaged, or do you see something I am missing?

It's all but guaranteed to be thin (and possibly without gum when added as well, who knows). The Edison was probably the same, although all it really had to be was hinged heavily.

No one would use an undamge example of of a C6 on a cover like this. There is a wrinkle/crease at the upper left by the you of US, and that is just what can be seen from the front. As someone eslse pointed out, it is most likely either thinned or it had no gum.

embarassing typo fixed

C1-C6 were hot stamps at that time (and for a long time before and after). No one would have put a sound mint of any of them on a cover in those days.
